Top Five Foodie Treats in Sussex For 2019

Rye Bay Scallop Week (23 February- 3 March)

Did you know scallops are a good source of protein, calcium, iron and vitamin B12? Or that local laws restricting the scallop-catch to winter months are strictly observed? This is your chance to sample the famous Rye Bay scallops and plenty of other wonderful seafood. Local restaurants will be showcasing a variety of scallop dishes and there'll be tasting events, cookery schools, demonstrations, music and lots more.

Wealden Food & Wine Festival (July)

Details haven't been released yet, but this annual foodie event has been based at historic Pevensey Castle in recent years. It highlights many of the first-class food and wine producers in Sussex, in fabulous surroundings. Expect food demos, celebs, entertainment and history all rolled into one festival.

Chilli Fiesta 2019 at West Dean Gardens (10-12 August)

Expect a sizzling array of foodie treats, cookery demonstrations, gardening workshops, dancing, children's activities, a vintage fair, outdoor cinema and loads more – all based around the chilli. If you thought they were powerful this'll open your eyes even more! Plus you get the chance to explore the lovely West Dean gardens.

Weald & Downland Open-Air Museum (October) Pasture to Plate: Farming, Food & Horticulture

An exiting new Autumn show celebrating the farming and food heritage of Sussex. Full details haven't been released yet but it's bound to be brilliant, and the museum is always a great day out for all the family.

Hastings Herring Fair (November)

Help celebrate an often-undervalued but very versatile fish – and support a local industry. The Hastings fishing fleet has been catching local herring for centuries and if you've ever tried bloaters, bucklers, kippers or pickled herring, or seen a sparkling catch of these distinctive silvery fish, you'll know what we're talking about. There's cookery demos, loads of produce stalls, sea-themed kids' activities, beer and a ceilidh, so it's a lovely family event. See you there!
