Sussex in winter has plenty of events to enjoy during a short break or a week's holiday. As the nights draw in, one of my favourite places is the South Downs Planetarium at Chichester. You can sit back and gaze at different aspects of the night sky from the comfort of indoors, with a fascinating commentary. Once the show's over, with any luck, you emerge into a clear night with a great view of the stars and a sense of being part of something awesome. If you're not staying in Chichester itself you might well have a beautiful, starlit drive back to your holiday cottage - the South Downs get some fabulous night skies.
This would be a great way to round off a day out in Chichester. With its ancient city walls, cathedral, Festival Theatre and Pallant Gallery there is plenty to see and do, plus lovely shops in the very accessible, pretty town centre with its distinctive focal point of the Market Cross. In fact Chichester is one of the country's great well-preserved Georgian cities and a stroll around the Pallants will reward you with some beautiful architecture, while the Guildhall and the old almshouses are proper gems. You'll find plenty of delightful places to eat, too, and if you're staying in Chichester or you have no time constraints there are plenty of options for an evening meal or a pre-theatre snack.
Just outside Chichester is the famous Roman Palace at Fishbourne, with its super little museum that's geared up for adults and children alike to enjoy. If you're gasping for some sea air after all the sightseeing, you could also take a stroll (or a brisk walk if it's chilly!) round Pagham Harbour, a lovely route that's flat and easy for all the family.
We have a lovely selection of holiday properties in and around Chichester and Goodwood, from cosy cottages to luxury lets, so do click here to take a look at our website.
