Never mind the Winter Olympics, Sussex has its own sporting prowess to shout about. Last month East Grinstead won the national indoor hockey fives title at Wembley for a record sixth consecutive time, beating Canterbury 8-4. And Sussex was well represented at, wait for it, the Naked Sledding World Championships in Germany a few weeks ago. I kid you not. Three Sussex hopefuls made the shortlist of 10 from about 500 applications (hard to believe, isn't it?) from which just one pair were chosen - the two local lasses didn't make it but Thomas Chrusciel from Eastbourne did. Thomas and his partner got to sled a 50m artificial slope, actually not quite naked but wearing just pants, boots and helmet. I'm not sure which is weirder. Sadly, no medal for Team GB this time but one report referred to an audience of 8,000 naked sledding enthusiasts - I leave you to infer the rest. I'm not sure if this is a sport that would take off on the South Downs but I think the phrase is, 'don't try this at home, kids.'
Meanwhile back in the clothed world, Brighton recently got the go-ahead to host its speed trials again in September (and by the way, if you haven't already booked your holiday accommodation for Brighton Festival this year, you'd better hurry, click here to view our selection of properties here). The adrenaline-fuelled speed trials has been running since 1905 but safety concerns had put its future in jeopardy until a huge petition showed the strength of feeling it engenders, and so it was saved. What intrigued me about the list of famous names who signed said petition was that they included The Stig from Top Gear. How can this be? Does he or she sign cheques 'The Stig' as well? Anyway, September 6 is the big day when you can watch more than 200 cars and motorbikes sprint along Madeira Drive on the seafront, so if you haven't already booked your Sussex holiday accommodation now's the time to do it - we have glorious cottages and luxury lets within easy reach, or how about a roof terrace or seafront apartment?
