Fun at Firle, East Sussex

Vintage Fair at Firle Place, East Sussex

Firle Vintage Fair is a lovely East Sussex event taking place over the weekend of August 13-14th. It's a lovely mixture - an intimate-feeling event at a beautiful venue with enough space to absorb lots of visitors. Whether you're shopping or browsing, the stalls with their selection of quality antique and vintage clothes, homeware, garden goods and linen look tempting and seem to get better every year.

The pavilion will be hosting jazz bands, dancers and other performers, and you'll be able to taste artisan Firle beers or indulge at the Champagne bar on the lawns in front of Firle Place itself - where you'll also find a wonderful collection of classic cars to look at. With traditional fairground rides, puppet shows and story telling there's plenty to keep the children entertained, while the whole family can join in with the craft workshops.

I'd strongly recommend a walk around the wider area - Firle Place itself is delightful, the village is classic Sussex and, high above it all, Firle Beacon is one of my favourite South Downs walks; it's steep though, so whether you can do that as well might depend on how much energy the kids and granny can muster!

And if you're thinking 'bother, that's just too early for our holiday in Sussex' there's still the International Horse Trials, Country Fair and Dog Festival the following weekend. While I'm delighted to say several top Sussex event riders will be absent because of a little competition in Rio, there's still an international CIC* which is sure to be well-contested. The Kennel Club dog show on Sunday 21st will include terrier and lurcher racing and a gun-dog scurry - sounds like a lot of serious fun, and with archery on the lawns, plenty of trade stands, a Wealden crafts marquee and loads of lovely food and drink, yet again there'll be something for all the family.

So do head on down to Firle in August - if you're staying in one of our self-catering cottages near Lewes you're in the ideal place.  If you are still looking to book accommodation in this area then please click here to see our selection.
