Half term in Sussex - yee-haa!

Pumpkin display at Slindon, West Sussex

October half term again! And self-catering in Sussex is the only way to do it. Whether you're snuggling in one of our cosy South Downs cottages, bringing friends and family to one of our holiday homes for large groups (click here to view) or indulging yourself in a luxury holiday let, you've plenty of great reasons to drag yourself away from the woodburner and get out and about.

For a half term holiday it's pretty likely you've brought the whole family, so I'll start with some of the activities on offer for kids. Well, for the whole of this month the famous Slindon Pumpkin Festival is going on; and with Hallowe'en high on the agenda right now I think the Hallowe'en Hauntings at Fishers Farm Park, Shriek Week at Drusillas or - and I'm seeing ghosts here, though that might not be how it's intended - Roman Army week at Fishbourne Roman Palace could be well worth a day out, and Fishbourne always holds excellent workshops and events for kids so do check them out.

I particularly love the museum displays at Fishbourne as they're very informative and well thought-out for visitors of any age. If it's mosaics and atmosphere you're after then Bignor Roman Villa, set in the heart of the South Downs National Park, might just have the edge for me, but I can highly recommend a visit to both these historical Roman sites in Sussex. I don't think Dad will want to nip off for a round of golf if everyone else is going there...

On a different half-term note, the Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux has several open evenings this month as well as its usual daily opening. For half-term week there are plenty of Telescope Tours and special Science Shows - not that these only take place in the school holidays, just that there'll be more of them. Children's workshops with titles like 'Earth and Beyond' and 'Eyes on the Universe' sound brilliant, and of course, like every self-respecting Sussex visitor attraction, the Observatory's holding its own Hallowe'en Spooktacular Weekend.

That should keep us all busy. Enjoy Sussex!
