Polo and Parties!

Posted 23 December 2016 by Andrew Gardner google authorship button

Who said winter has to be the quiet season? If you have a party to entertain our premier holiday homes near Goodwood and Hickstead could be just the ticket. Some of the best society parties happen around the polo field in high summer, and now they go on through the winter as well thanks to the relatively new, adrenalin-fuelled sport of arena polo.
Arena polo has become hugely popular with players and spectators alike. It's fast and furious, perhaps even more than traditional summer polo because the confines of an arena make it look even more frenetic. With teams of three instead of five and a larger, softer ball, shots and angles can be ricocheted off the boards, so there's huge scope for clever play.

At Hickstead, arena polo tournaments take place pretty much every other week through the winter, with club chukkas and challenge matches on the other weeks. It's a great day out. And for the summer season, where else but the incomparable Cowdray Park, home of the Gold Cup? It's so close to Sussex you can almost hear the cheering from here.
If you're tempted to have a go, there are plenty of polo facilities around Sussex. You can have lessons at Hickstead, or at Kenney Jones's Hurtwood club for rock'n'roll cachet as well as serious play, then there's Sussex Polo and a surprising number of others - I'd never realised Sussex had so many polo clubs. If you've never ridden a horse you can try a simulator first; many polo players come into the sport without having ridden before.
Some clubs allow you to bring your own ponies and use the livery facilities - and with your ponies in five-star luxury, you'll be wanting the same for yourself. Our luxury lets and cottages for large groups are the perfect base to entertain friends and family for a summer party or a festive gathering, along with the wonderful hospitality options that polo clubs offer.

Happy Christmas and a peaceful new year to you all. Whether you're curled up by the woodburner in a cosy country cottage, or revelling with family or friends in one of our larger properties for groups, enjoy Sussex and don't forget to book early for next year!
