The Sussex holiday cottage blog » Racing Ahead
Staying in one of our Chichester holiday cottages, or a luxury let near Goodwood? You'll find so much to do in the area this month that you'll hardly have time to explore the rest of Sussex.
I could hardly let August pass without mentioning Glorious Goodwood - the flat-racing festival that's the sporting and social highlight of the season. Our superb holiday homes on the South Downs make an ideal base for any of the major events at Goodwood so do book ahead for next year.
But Goodwood has plenty of other race meetings too - there's the August bank holiday special with a fireworks finale, for example. And why not get a little more involved? Take a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour, or watch the horses leap out of the start-gates at close quarters - options available at several Sussex racecourses, but you do need to book ahead. Nearby Fontwell is also a lively venue that's great for groups.
Also in that area of the South Downs is the lovely Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, where you'll find loads of holiday activities - how about Wonderful Wednesdays for kids, the Family Twilight Tail Trail, a Vintage and Steam weekend, or an evening concert billed as 'Vintage Music'? Then over at wonderful West Dean there's the annual Chilli Fiesta, which is really a family-friendly festival but has plenty for serious cooks and chilli aficionados too.
Theatre events for all the family are on offer - the Chichester Festival Youth Theatre is staging Philip Pullman's 'Grimm Tales for Young and Old' in the lovely setting of the Cass Sculpture Foundation, while back at the Weald and Downland you'll find a production of David Walliams' 'Billionaire Boy'. Theatre, fun, a lovely setting, close to your holiday hideaway - what's not to like?
