Hickstead - I love it! If you're staying in one of our Sussex holiday cottages this month, do go along to the Longlines Royal International Horse Show
. It'll have showing classes, international show jumping, novelty stuff and plenty of equestrian and country stores for shopping. Plus fairground-style rides for the younger kids - they think of everything - and you can even take the dog.
Even for a non-rider like me, there's a fascination in watching horses do some pretty amazing things - I sat through the speed derby competition at last month's Al Shira'aa Derby meeting and loved every minute. I enjoy the action, though I'm not always sure what's going on, but one of the lovely things about Hickstead is that someone is always willing to explain. It's a very friendly place; in the public stands everyone chats to each other. So I learnt that the fence nearest where we were sitting wasn't meant to be approached on a strange, wiggly line with riders hanging off the side - it just happened to involve a long, fast approach straight towards the edge of the arena and a packed stand, which some horses found daunting. But my favourite class is still the scurry driving, not least because the pairs of ponies always have great names like Owl and Tigger, Chip 'n' Dale or Gin & Tonic (OK, I made that last one up).
Hickstead's just one of the many excellent days out that are handy for our Sussex holiday homes.
Whether sports or social is the attraction for you, the showground has it all. If one of your party prefers a few quiet rounds of golf, or something more adrenalin-fuelled, Sussex can do it (I can't believe I had to miss the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year), and whether you're staying in a country cottage, a seaside apartment or one of our luxury lets, it's likely to be within easy reach.
So kick back and relax - make the most of everything Sussex has to offer, and you might just have to visit us again to take in the bits you missed.
