Where to find dinosaurs in Sussex

Hey fossil-fans, we have our own Jurassic Park in Sussex! The coast near Hastings has been very popular with fossil-hunters for a long time – significant dinosaur bones have been found there in the past - but it's been in the news again recently. It seems that over the past four years cliff erosion between Hastings and Fairlight has revealed a huge number of very detailed dinosaur footprints from the early Cretaceous period. Some are more than half a metre long, with incredibly detailed markings of skin, scales and claws, and they're thought to be from species including ankylosaurus and iguanodon (see how those tripped off my tongue - impressive, eh?).

Something ghoulish for Hallowe'en half term, anyone? I've been exploring the creepy side of Sussex so you can head for the best family attractions. Whoooo! To my mind it doesn't get much more ghoulish than the True Crime Museum in Hastings. There's a Hallowe'en Murder Mystery Mind Bender all week, an evening True Crime Walk on 30th, plus curator's talks and all the regular exhibits. And if you need a walk to blow away the cobwebs afterwards, it's right on the seafront.

Paddleboarding is a fast-growing sport – everyone's having a go. They say if you can walk upstairs you can have a go, whatever your age, though if you're going to try it in deep water you should be able to swim. Start with lessons on a nice big, wide board for extra stability, then move on to something smaller and faster if you like. Make waves!

Anyone for Poohsticks?

Blog Thumbnail - Anyone for Poohsticks?
Reading AA Milne poems to a young relative lately reminded me of one of the best family days out in the Ashdown Forest - a visit to the Poohsticks Bridge. How can any Pooh Bear fan, of any age, resist? The bridge itself is surprisingly small but you can just imagine how secret it must have felt to a small child who lived and played there. You will most likely be sharing it with other visitors but that's half the fun and, after all, gives plenty of scope for playing Poohsticks.
