The historic High Street of East Grinstead will take you back through 800 years of Sussex heritage. The southern part remains largely unchanged with its regular street market giving an insight into this market town at the northern tip of Sussex.
Many country holiday cottages in East Grinstead benefit from being in outstanding locations with distant views to the Ashdown Forest. East Grinstead is situated in the High Weald on the boundary between East Sussex, West Sussex and Surrey. It is in a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its rolling hills, small irregular fields, abundant woods and hedges, scattered farmsteads and sunken lanes.
Our choice of self catering country holiday accommodation in the High Weald area possess magnificent views and are a wonderful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Standen House found at the end of a quiet Sussex lane on the edge of East Grinstead is only a couple of miles from the holiday cottages we have here. With fabulous views to the Weirwood Resevoir, it is a Victorian family home designed by Philip Webb and furnished by William Morris. Today it is owned by The National Trust.
Other local attractions include the Bluebell Railway, the first preserved steam railway which when it opened in 1960 reconnected Sheffield Park with Horsted Keynes. Today it operates beyond to West Hoathly and on to Kingscote and will soon link to East Grinstead. Why not take a steam buff’s cottage holiday at one of our cottages along the Bluebell Line. The line journeys through some totally unspoilt Sussex countryside.
At the southern end of the Bluebell Railway are the stunning Sheffield Park Gardens in East Sussex, offering beautiful picture lakes to walk around and masses of sparkling spring foliage and then later golden and deep red autumn colours.
To the west is both Wakehurst Place, home to Kew Garden’s Millennium Seed Bank and The Ardingly Showground which hosts the annual South of England Show, the premier agricultural and family show in the south. A country cottage holiday in East Grinstead and the High Weald will never leave you with too few things to do!
Immediately south of East Grinstead is the beautiful village of Forest Row and its neighbour Ashurst Wood. Beautiful country cottages abound here. These lovely Sussex villages fringe the Ashdown Forest, possibly best known as ‘home’ to Winnie the Pooh! Holiday cottages in the Ashdown Forest are the perfect base from which to explore this stunning woodland on foot or by mountain bike, and to visit the Ashdown Forest Llama Park in the heart of the forest.
Friendly restaurants, pubs, bars and coffee shops abound in East Grinstead, and our self-catering holiday cottages give you every chance to sample these.
Other picturesque holiday villages are Turners Hill at the top of the High Weald, and Lingfield in Surrey.
