A delightful Grade II listed flint holiday cottage in the heart of Arundel

In the most perfect of settings in the heart of Arundel, this charming Grade II listed flint cottage is just yards from the magnificent Arundel Cathedral.

Cathedral View is in a beautifully quiet street, something that is so rare in the centre of town. From the courtyard garden there are views to the cathedral which at night, when fully illuminated, makes a wonderful spectacle and every reason to enjoy the garden late into the evening.

With two bedrooms, a double and a single, this three storey cottage can sleep four when the pull out bed in the second bedroom is used. A stair-gate can also be fitted to this bedroom making it ideal for families with young children. The family bathroom is on the first floor, and contains a bath, a separate shower cubicle, a basin and a WC.

The accommodation has a homely feel to it, the lounge is comfortable and relaxing while the kitchen is fully equipped. Whether you choose to use it though with so many pubs and restaurants on the doorstep is your choice.

Arundel and beyond

Arundel is a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tearooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy its hospitality.

Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England, and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep (which dates from the 11th century) to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs is definitely worth the effort.

Beyond the castle grounds Arundel Park extends north towards the Downs offering many fine walks. A two mile walk to the top affords fantastic downland views and south to the coast.

The River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife. With more than 60 acres of ponds, lakes and reed beds, Arundel Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust attracts some of the worlds most spectacular ducks, geese and swans. The best way to enjoy the river is on a river cruise stopping off at the Black Rabbit pub, or proceeding further north where the river hugs the scarp wooded slope at the foot of the Downs before reaching Amberley.

Further afield Arundel is well placed for the coast. Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest. At the eastern end beside the mouth of the River Arun is the West Beach Café built by local craftsmen using materials sourced locally. It is worth a visit, the fish and chips come highly recommended!

Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are nearby, along with the cathedral city of Chichester with its excellent Festival Theatre noted for not only the quality of productions but also the fact many world premieres are featured as well.
If you fancy a day in the city, Arundel mainline station is on a direct route to London, so why not mix the cosmopolitan capital with this beautiful part of Sussex?

A Brief stay in Arundel

"We used Cathedral Cottage as a base for working at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. A lovely cottage with a lovely view of the cathedral and over the valley at either end of the road but marked down for location due to an issue with car parking. However this will not stop us using this cottage again now we know the issue. The cottage was lovely and the welcome gift of flowers, wine and milk was gratefully received. Whilst Arundel has some lovely restaurants unfortunately we didn?t get chance to sample them (apart from La Campania which was wonderful) and the cottage had all we needed to prepare our evening meals. We hope to be back again next year."

Great cottage - ideal location

"Lovely cosy little cottage within walking distance of all Arundel attractions, shops, cafes and pubs. It is very well equipped. clean and suited us perfectly - would be no use to anyone with limited mobility as the stairs are steep.. The only downside of the property is the lack of parking - had to park quite some distance away and endure the unimpressed looks of the locals!!!!"

Bank holiday weekend stay

"We stayed in Arundel over a long weekend for a family wedding. 3 people and one small dog (Yorkie). The location of the cottage was perfect for us and the fully enclosed garden was great for the dog. When we arrived the "welcome" in the fridge and the lovely flowers on the table were much appreciated. The property was very neat and clean and the kitchen well equipped. The stairs, which are mentioned in the property details, weren't a problem for any of us (all pensioners). Overall, a very pleasant stay. Being located at the end of a narrow cul-de-sac meant the cottage was wonderfully quiet but made parking a bit of a challenge."

Perfect location if you want to walk the dog, enjoy the village and get a taste of living in Arundel

"Perfect location. Nearby the park and its further surroundings to walk the dog (for hours, including nice pubs for lunch). Inside the older village (which brings you back two centuries). Very close to the best an most hospitable pub (the dog definitely agrees). The cottage is clean, complete, warm and offers all the facilities you can wish for with four adults and two dogs. Didn't miss anything, although i make it a habit to bring my own cooking knives, tea glasses and filter coffee (which was not necessary). There is a sufficient amount of cleaning tools (including consumables). Towels, bedlinen and toiletpaper are provided. We will definitely come back."

A week in Arundel.

"We had a very nice stay in Cathedral view. The cottage is in a central location, good for walking around Arundel. The only problem was car parking, the whole area is filled with cars."

"A lovely little cottage - ideal for what we needed. It was well appointed with everything you need and we really liked the little extras that were presented, and lovely flowers. The beds were very comfortable and good pillows. The Cottage is a very short walk into Arundel. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. I have given it 90/100 because the parking is REALLY tight, particularly on the weekend we were there which was very busy. I would use this Cottage again."

Compact cottage in the heart of Arundel

"A typical Arundel dwelling in a very quiet street just below the impressive cathedral. It is within easy reach of everything and very comfortable for two people. The back garden is tiny but well-tended and surprisingly pleasant to sit out in. It was well equipped and very clean and comfortable, especially the king-size bed. The single bed, however, is in a loft extension which got rather hot in the very warm weather of the week we were there and would probably have given sleep problems to anyone using it. The bedrooms are accessed by a steep, boxed-in staircase which might be difficult for anyone with limited mobility. "

A homely, cosy cottage.

"This cottage exceeded my expectations. I knew the location was perfect - on a quiet road with a lovely view of the cathedral, but I did not know that the place would be so homely and cosy. The bedrooms were sunny, the beds comfortable, and the rest of the cottage was very well-equipped. There is a radio, DVD player with a good selection of films, and a CD player with an eclectic selection of music! There is tea, coffee, milk, lots of fluffy towels, and there was even a bottle of white wine chilling in the fridge! When we found the heating difficult to operate, the owners appeared within ten minutes and sorted out the problem. The stairs are very steep, which would not suit an elderly person or small children. But for two 50-somethings and a couple of older kids, they were fine. I would not try to park outside the cottage, as the road is very narrow, but there are other places to park nearby. "

Excellent clean cottage

"Stay for 5 nights . The cottage has everything you need, very clean . The only downside Was the dreaded stairs . Not suitable for the less able person or a over excited dog ( he fell down them when we first arrive , had to carry him up and down for the rest of stay.)Lots of nice places to eat out or get a takeaway . Owners of cottage run local pub . Very helpful and friendly. A lot of the pubs are dog friendly. Lots of places nearby to visit Brighton, Worthing and littlehampton just a few we visited. "

Thank you for your comments, it's good to know that dogs are just as excited as their owners about going on holiday! We hope you managed the stairs with your dog in arms without any further mishap! We're delighted you enjoyed Arundel and we hope we may see you again on a future occasion.

Home from home but stairs a little tricky

"Delightful cottage. We really felt at home. Very comfortable and well equipped. The steep stairs were a bit tricky for my elderly mother. An extra small handrail, or something to hold on to, at the bottom of the main stairs would have been good. The lighting in the kitchen wasn't excellent. I think there may have been a fault with one or more of the fittings. Overall though a lovely cosy cottage and we enjoyed our stay."

Homely, comfortable and recommended.

"We had a lovely few days staying here. The accommodation was just right for us (2 adults + 2 young children) and was in easy walking reach of everything we wanted to see, including the castle and Fitzalan chapel, the WWT centre and the seafront at Littlehampton (via bus from the high street). The friendly owners are very handily to be found just down the road at the King's Arms on Tarrant Street where they also serve a nice pint. "
