The perfect mid Sussex holiday location to explore the county and its wealth of attractions

There are photographs on the wall that record the conversion from a totally dilapidated farm building into this wonderful ground and first floor granary that welcomes you. In a private setting at the end of a long unmade lane, Cuckfield Granary sits amongst a small organic farm and offers many walks from the doorstep and is just a short stroll into the picturesque mid Sussex town of Cuckfield.

One of the highlights of the granary is the first floor terrace and the panoramic views it offers towards the South Downs in the distance. It is presented to an exceptional standard. The kitchen is a wonderful social space with a woodburning stove and relaxing sofa. The two upstairs bedrooms each have their own facilities with a bath and hand held shower attachment to the main bedroom and an ensuite shower room to the second bedroom. Both bedrooms are doubles, with the principal bedroom containing a king sized bed, and the second bedroom a standard sized double.

If flexibility of sleeping is required there is a sofa bed available in the living room. The overall sleeping capacity remains four people and there is a £50.00 charge per booking for bedding if the sofa bed is to be used. Please let us know if you will require the sofa bed so that the housekeepers will know to leave out the bed linen.

Outside you will enjoy the terrace. Perfect for meals on those lazy summer days!

Cuckfield and beyond

Cuckfield is one of the prettiest small towns in Sussex. Being so central in the county it is ideally situated to explore much that Sussex has to offer. Within two miles Borde Hill Gardens have been described by Country Life magazine as one of the country’s truly great gardens. The gardens offer outstanding views across 200 acres of Grade II listed parkland and woodland.

Head north into the rolling Sussex Weald and you soon reach Ardingly Reservoir . It is a large expanse of natural water and an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are plentiful walks around the reservoir and for those who enjoy watersports it is a haven of activity for sailors, windsurfers and canoeists.

Access to and from this part of mid Sussex is excellent with other gardens such as Nymans and High Beeches just a few miles to the north and Wakehurst Place with its close association with Kew is within a fifteen minute drive to the east. With good communication links to Brighton, both the south coast and the South Downs are a short distance away while a day trip to London by rail is so easy from nearby Haywards Heath.

A lovely relaxing home from home!

"This is a lovely cottage which has been well converted with modern fittings and is well maintained. Approached down a farm track (with a few potholes!) it is in quiet location and delightfully situated in Cuckfield with many different walks close by. Nearby is the town of Haywards Heath which has a good Sainsbury's, Waitrose and M&S Foodhall so you have all the necessities close to hand and a local Co-Op for any last minute essentials. We have stayed here 3 times and have already booked again for next year and veiw it as our home from home."

Great social space with lovely rural outlook on edge of village

"Second time we stayed as we liked it so much last time (3 weeks each occasion) Pros - Huge kitchen diner well stocked with equipment. Provisions (crockery, glassware, linens etc) nice. Generous sized bedrooms with lovely en suites. Lovely rural aspect only 5 mins walk from village. (There is an A road quite close but only occasionally audible when windows are open). Owners v responsive to problems. Close to Ockenden Manor with excellent spa. Cons - v bumpy road down to house. Sofas not v comfy if 4 guests want to sit around. This time only one (not v thorough) clean in 3 weeks vs 2 excellent cleans last time. Lighting in bathrooms not designed for doing make up!"

Excellent place to stay.

"The Granary is a superb holiday cottage, beautifully equipped and maintained. I came with a friend to explore gardens and houses in Sussex, and the situation is perfect. Both of us live in the country, so enjoyed the views over the fields, the PYO strawberries a few feet away, and quickly ignored the noise from the road hidden by trees, beyond the field, which we are not used to."

Idyllic

"Once again we enjoyed an extremely relaxing 10 day stay in this charming cottage whilst recovering from the journey from New Zealand. The location is ideal with great access to London, Crawley & Brighton or a short drive to supermarkets & stores in Haywards Heath or Burgess Hill. The cottage itself is just lovely and great for entertaining. Views are fabulous as are the local walks and everyone in the village seemed friendly and welcoming. All this capped off by the neighbors pet donkeys who when offered an apple will be your friends for ever!"

80th birthday week

"A simply lovely place - beautifully maintained, welcoming and warm - even at the cold end of November: snowflakes drifting past window on last morning, yet drinks on the deck in earlier days' sunshine. The technicalities of electrics were challenging at 80, but even the towel rail heating (very necessary in the bathroom) got sorted with help! A possible extra would be some brighter lighting in the "snug" to add cheer. The walk to family living in Cuckfield was/is so very convenient that I'm sure I will be making future visits to The Granary. Very many thanks to all concerned."

Weekend away

"Modern barn conversion decorated in a contemporary style, finished to a high standard. The balcony would be amazing on a summer evening. The main focus of the property is the kitchen. The only slight issue we had was our dog "sniffing out" two bones from under the settee which had been left by a previous " doggy guest". The lane to the property is very potholed and rutted and needs care to negotiate. "

Terrific cottage in Sussex

"Lovely cottage in Cuckfield. Pros - v well appointed, fab open plan kitchen made for great living space, good for entertaining as kitchen is well stocked, wonderful views, easy access to lovely walks, beautiful village and church, lovely spa at Ockenden Manor v close. Bedrooms and bathrooms v spacious, little farm shop next door. V easy access to Haywards Heath so can experience country living while 10 mins from Waitrose and M&S. Cons - not many. Not much outside space and no sun loungers but it's so at the heart of the countryside it's wonderfully open. Lane down to cottage is bumpy in patches and needs careful navigation. We thought it was fab and have already booked for next year. "

Escape in the countryside

"What a great place to stay with friends or family. It's clean, well equipped, and that little farm shop next to it gives it that extra touch of feel goodness. Accessing to the property (road, or shall I say path) could be better but it is located behind a farm so I guess it is expected to be so. I'd stay again without a doubt. "

Week long break

"We were looking for a comfortable base from which to explore the south downs and coast. It was a very convenient location to do this and Cuckfield has good pubs, shops etc. The property is spacious (for two bedrooms) and we'll laid out downstairs for 'chilled' living. Would recommend and stay again. All comments in the visitors book are complementary. "

Autumn Visit

"It is a stylish property and generally well equipped but a few things spoiled it for us: running out of hot water when using the shower, pillows weren't comfortable and we were disappointed that the log burner could not be enjoyed from any of the sofas. When we arrived, the upstairs needed clearing of umpteen flies, dead and alive. However, it was great to be able to walk out into the countryside and village and we loved Cuckfield."

We are sorry to read you found problems at the Granary. Thank you for alerting us regarding the hot water, we will make a precautionary check. We can assure you the hot water tank is correct for the size of the building and it is often a case of supply and demand, which we did encounter on one previous occasion when showers and baths were all taken at once following guests attending a local outside festival! Under such circumstances it can take a short while for water to come back up to temperature. The pillows are all of good quality and are supplied by the White Company. We accept though that comfort tends to be very much a personal thing and we're sorry if these pillows weren't to your liking. The log burner is as advertised on the website as being located in the main kitchen area and the property is otherwise heated very well throughout. We apologise that you encountered some flies. The Granary was prepared the day before you arrived and the owner delivered the welcome pack to you just prior to your arrival where she thoroughly checked the accommodation for you. She did not report anything untoward but we are sorry that you had to deal with them. The accommodation is next to a small arable farm and the weather continues to remain mild at the moment. However we are pleased that this aside you thoroughly enjoyed the local area.
