Holiday cottage, Denton, East Sussex
Grans Cottage great place, great location!
"Just got back from celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary at Grans Cottage. As ex pats from Sussex (now living in Cornwall) we know the area well, but were still amazed at this quiet haven just of the busy main road. The cottage is very well fitted out with lots of extras such as board games, dvds and books to while away any inclement evenings. The cottage itself is wonderful, with lots of hidden gems such as the large bedroom in the attic, a surprisingly large bathroom for the cottage size and a little suntrap courtyard to the rear of the property.. We had a few minor niggles such as the size and quality of the tv in the living room and no BBQ, However these did not detract from our enjoyment of the cottage. Its a little gem.... Just one word of warning the steps leading to the cottage are quite narrow and steep (as are the steps in the rear garden), anyone with mobility issues or small children should be aware) - Reviewed by Shelley"
"Excellent throughout. Very clean and well-equipped. There was even a bottle of Prosecco in the 'fridge for us! Denton in Newhaven is a lovely village and there is a bus stop just across the road, although the railway station is within walking distance (about twenty minutes walk). "
Gran's Cottage is a lovely, character filled cottage that offers comfortable accommodation for your holiday break. With lovely features and ample space (alongwith a welcoming bottle of wine!), this is perfect for walkers wanting to enjoy the surrounding options of hikes across the Downs or cliff top walks at nearby Cuckmere Haven. Families wanting to enjoy the numerous activities on offer in the surrounding areas will also enjoy this cottage base.
On approaching the cottage, you enter a beautifully kept front garden with a bench overlooking the parish church and the Downs beyond. Then, as you enter the cottage, you are welcomed by a warm and cosy living room with comfortable sofas surrounding a central fireplace. There is entertainment available with Freeview television, a DVD player and a games cupboard to provide some family fun in the evenings. The lounge leads up to the homely country style kitchen with all the amenities you will need for your stay including a full oven and hob, dishwasher and washing machine. The kitchen leads onto the rear garden patio area with an option to dine outside if the weather is favourable and the quirky tiered garden offers a glimpse of the Downs from its highest point.
After ascending the staircase, you find the dining room offering a full sized table for four with a second television and a view over the rear garden. Also on this floor is the family bathroom with bath and an overhead telephone shower attachment, WC and basin. To the front of the first floor is the second bedroom, which is a lovely space with views of the rolling hills beyond the church. The principal bedroom is accessed by a wooden staircase which opens up into a spacious bedroom area with double aspect windows.
There is easily accessible street parking to the front of the property.
Denton is a small village, inside the town boundary of Newhaven, which backs onto the beautiful landscape of the South Downs. The parish church, St. Leonard's, is situated opposite Gran's Cottage. This church was first built around 1288 and later extended and carefully restored, there is also the remains of what is thought to have been a Priest's House in the west end of the churchyard which dates from about 1280. It is just a short walk from the cottage to the church and then onwards to access many pathways on the Downs and experience the wonderful views to the sea beyond.
Newhaven and the coast are just 1.5 miles from Gran's Cottage where you can find much to explore including the Newhaven Fort which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the South Downs and Sussex coast. This coastal Fortress was built during the 1860's and overlooks both Newhaven Harbour and Seaford Bay. From here you can enjoy many walks westward along the coast to Telscombe Cliffs and beyond towards Brighton.
Further along the coast to the east, there is the Seven Sisters Country Park which is made up of 280 hectares of chalk cliffs, with a meandering river valley and open chalk grassland. It is a popular place for a number of outdoor activities including walking, birdwatching, cycling and canoeing. The park is named after the famous Seven Sisters chalk cliffs which are on one of Britain's finest unspoilt coastlines and are well worth a day trip for the spectacular views alone.
Just 20 minutes drive and you can be exploring the wonderful historic market town of Lewes. This impressive town is home to Lewes Castle which offers magnificent views across the town of Lewes and the surrounding downland. The adjacent Barbican House holds an extensive collection of local history and archaeological artefacts. The River Ouse flows through the town dividing it into two areas between Cliffe High Street presented in beautiful period style with its gateway, a paved bridge, crossing the river and the main High Street that heads up the hill. There are a multitude of cafes, restaurants and bars to visit in Lewes and, if you visit on the first Saturday of the month, there is a thriving Farmers’ Market with lots of delicious fare on offer!
Gran's Cottage is also perfectly positioned for access to Glyndebourne with its busy programme of international cultural events, Drusillas Farm Park for all year round family fun and the wonderful historic stately home of Firle Place. Also, with the bustling cosmopolitan city of Brighton just 40 minutes drive away, the hardest part of your holiday will be trying to fit everything in!
