A delightful country retreat set within the South Downs National Park offering stunning views of the surrounding area and easy access to Petworth, Arundel, Goodwood and Chichester

Lee Cottage is the perfect destination for a relaxing family holiday or small group attending one of the numerous prestigious events in this area of West Sussex. This spacious home has everything you could need for your stay

The generous lounge is lovely and light and is a warm and welcoming space with an open wood fire at the centre (available in winter only). With large picture windows overlooking the garden and meadows to the front as well as views to the rear garden and the decorative pond, it truly brings the outside in! There is a useful cloakroom on the ground floor as well as a quiet study with views across the garden to the South Downs.

The fabulous dining room is perfect for a celebratory meal or for a family gathering as the table can seat up to ten people. There is a conservatory accessed from here which can be used as a breakfast room or a children's play area as it has its own entrance from the garden.

There are three delightfully decorated bedrooms on the first floor each offering stunning views of the area. The principal bedroom has a double bed and its own ensuite bathroom with a bath and shower overhead, WC and basin. The two further bedroom are both twin bedded, again with delightful aspects over the front gardens. There are two further bathrooms on this floor; one with a bath and shower overhead and the other with a bath only.

The stunning gardens of Lee Cottage wrap around the house and offer numerous alfresco dining options from the sunny terrace by the kitchen, perfect for breakfast, to the front terrace which has amazing views over the countryside and is just the spot for watching the sunset with a glass of wine. There is a lawned area to the rear of the cottage with an ornamental pond (with safety cover) and views to the woodland behind and the beautiful gardens contain over 150 species of plants which provides a changing palette of colours throughout the year.

The external outbuilding houses washing facilities and a boot room area and there is a separate garage for two cars as well as additional car parking on the driveway

Fittleworth and beyond

Lee Cottage is located within the boundary of the South Downs National Park which means there is an unending choice of walks from the doorstep with delightful paths to the local pubs in both Fittleworth and nearby Stopham. You can also visit one of several vineyards in the area which are showcasing the best of British winemaking such as Stopham Vineyard or Nyetimber.

You can also visit one of several vineyards in the area which are showcasing the best of British winemaking such as Stopham Vineyard or Nyetimber.

Nearby Pulborough is a short drive away and here you can visit the Pulborough Brooks which is a deliberate flood plain, so periodically it becomes a spectacular lake totally transforming the landscape. There are many excellent walks across the Brooks and along the banks of the River Arun offering uninterrupted views south towards the South Downs. Part of the Brooks contains one of the RSPB’s major reserves in the south and just three miles from the cottage. We carry a link to the RSPB reserve within ‘Places to visit’ on our website.

Also close by is the West Sussex Golf Club which is regularly judged one of the outstanding inland courses in Britain with ‘A priceless oasis of heather, sand, heath and trees beneath the Sussex Downs’. For any golf lover, staying at Lee Cottage is very convenient indeed.

Four miles south east in the direction of Storrington and nestling at the foot of the South Downs is Parham House, a magnificent Elizabethan home that is a real jewel. Again it is featured under ‘Places to visit’ — a half day there is time well spent.

Heading northwest from Fittleworth is the historic market town of Petworth. It is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned by the National Trust. The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to Petworth House and Park.

This area of West Sussex has a variety of events that occur through the year from Goodwood racing and the Goodwood motorsport meetings, to the Arundel Festival, racing at Fontwell and polo at Cowdray. Details on all of these are found under our ‘What’s on’ heading.

Littlehampton, which is under half an hours drive from Lee Cottage, has a bustling marina and harbour where you can watch the fishermen bringing in their daily catch or stroll along the boulevard enjoying the traditional seaside attractions. The Littlehampton Ferry can transport you between East and West Beaches during the summer months and you can take the opportunity to visit the West Beach Local Nature Reserve which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
