"Can't fault it. Chose Poets for it location and was very happy with it. Ideal for walks in the country, literally straight out of the building into Hangers (wooded hills). Portsmouth 25 mins away with lots of attractions."

A fantastic cottage at the foot of the Ashford Hangers

"My wife and I booked Poet's Barn originally to visit my son who is posted nearby. We wanted a self catering cottage that was dog friendly and close to dog friendly walks and we were not disappointed! Unfortunately my son wasn't able to stay with us due to change of shifts so it was just my wife, dog and I who were able to enjoy the home comforts. The directions we were given to the barn were spot on and found our way there with no trouble. It was lovely to arrive to fresh flowers, a bottle of wine and cake after a long journey! The barn is in fantastic order throughout, finished to a very high standard. The furniture and fittings are well made/great quality. In the sitting area there is a very comfortable L shaped sofa along with a leather two seater. The large flat screen TV has freeview TV. There is a DVD with selection of DVDs. A selection of books and magazines. There is a digital radio and iPod docking station. There are torches for dark night walks. In the dining area there are a selection of games in the sideboard along with local maps/books and a large oak dining table. In the kitchen there is a dishwasher washing machine and tucked under the stairs is a tumble dryer. The host had provided fresh milk along with tea, coffee and sugar, salt and pepper. There were dishwasher tablets, washing machine tablets, washing up liquid and scourer. Along with the built in oven, fridge freezer there is a microwave and toaster and every utensil, pot and pan you would need, definitely a home away from home. My wife was also impressed with the coffee machine which was amply supplied with coffee pods! There was also kitchen roll, kitchen foil, greaseproof paper and cling film and antibacterial spray. There is also a hoover and mop and bucket. The downstairs area (aside from the double bedroom) is tiled which makes keeping things clean very easy, especially with a dog in tow! The downstairs double is well furnished with built in wardrobes and the en-suite wet room is well finished and a great size. Upstairs again the master bedroom is a great size with built in wardrobes and fantastic windows. The bed is super king size. There is a third twin room, well furnished, double wardrobe and dressing table. The upstairs bathroom has a wonderful roll top bath which we made use of, my wife having a dip twice during our weekend there! Bath sheets/hand towels/face towels are provided for the maximum number of guests and there is hand wash, shower gel and bubble bath in each bathroom. There is ample heating/hot water which you are able to control yourself, which is great if you are out and about. Although we read that there wasn't a hairdryer provided, my wife found one in the downstairs bathroom. We enjoyed walks up the Ashford Hangers to Cobbetts View each day which is just behind the barn. We walked into Steep and sampled the home cooked delights at the Harrow Inn and Cricketers Inn/Arms. To summarise, everything has been thought of to make your stay here comfortable, we would highly recommend a visit, in fact my wife didn't want to come home! We were sad to have forgotten to write in the visitors book!"

May we thank you for taking the time to write such a comprehensive review, you certainly made up for having forgotten to write in the visitors book at Poet's Barn. We are pleased you had such an excellent stay, the barn is in a beautiful area of rolling wooded hills and tranquil lanes. We know it is a real find for many visitors.

Excellent house in beautiful Hampshire countryside.

"Wonderful walks in all directions. An interesting old pub in the village. Lovely house. Friendly owners from whom eggs and meat can be bought. Petersfield is a lovely old town on the doorstep."

This beautiful converted barn is in the heart of the Hampshire Hangers within the South Downs National Park

Poet's Barn is below the Poet's Stone that sits 800 feet up on the Hampshire Hangers. A memorial to Edward Thomas, it offers fabulous views to the South Downs. The setting here is just sublime and truly rural, with quiet country lanes, glorious walks aplenty, and a climb to the Stone from right outside the barn.

Set on a working farm with beef, sheep and poultry, the standard of accommodation here is exceptional. The barn has been thoughtfully presented for guests' comfort, and the design and finish is outstanding and very contemporary. The gable windows are a superb feature and make the property so different. Downstairs is a wonderful open living space with a fully equipped kitchen. There is also a downstairs bedroom with king sized bed and ensuite wet room. Upstairs the main bedroom is fitted with a super king sized bed and is just an amazing space. The second bedroom upstairs has twin beds and the family bathroom is fitted with a roll top bath with a shower attachment fitted to the taps.

Outside there is a private garden set on two levels with space for outdoor eating and relaxing.

Steep and beyond

The small village of Steep sits amongst the Hampshire Hangers, one of Hampshire’s most beautiful woodland areas. From the barn you can walk to the Poet's Stone at the top of the Hangers. This whole area is perfect for walkers and the peaceful and rural lanes make it popular with cyclists as well.

Consisting of 323 acres of woodland, with many magnificent beech trees. There is a rise and fall in the landscape here made the more impressive by the fact most the area is covered in trees. The scenery is outstanding and has been given the name “Little Switzerland” to this part of Hampshire.

Poet's Barn is just three miles from the historic market town of Petersfield and its leisure facilities. As the main junction between London to Portsmouth ,and Midhurst to Winchester the town enjoyed a brisk trade in coaching days and in 1696-97 had no fewer than nine coaching inns listed. There are certainly no shortage of country inns in the vicinity today!

Butser Hill at 270 metres (890 feet) is the highest point on the South Downs. It is easily accessible being just a short distance south of the town. The climb to the top is challenging but the views are rewarding and there is a refreshment kiosk at the top! It forms part of the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Hampshire’s biggest country park offering 20 miles of trails for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It is a popular recreational area. We feature a link to the park under our section “Places to visit” for East Hampshire from our homepage.

Hinton Ampner, and Stansted Park are both within easy reach, and across the border into Sussex is the National Trust property Uppark which is located high on the Downs at South Harting.

This area is very accessible, Portsmouth’s historic dockyard, the Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays are within twenty minutes by rail or car, while Winchester and the western end of the South Downs is less than 20 miles west of Petersfield.
