Tranquil self catering country cottage for two in the heart of the Sussex Weald

Quail Cottage is a very spacious and comfortable holiday destination for two people in the heart of the Sussex High Weald, with a network of footpaths and bridleways radiating from it. The cottage was originally a stable in the grounds of the owners' Medieval farmhouse, and was subsequently adapted to provide a home for two Rolls Royce motor cars. After the cars had moved out the building was skilfully converted into a spacious holiday cottage with great attention paid to the finishing details. The sitting room has a vaulted ceiling with many original timbers, and a high level feature window inserted in the gable end above full width fold back doors, floods the area with natural light. The internal joinery has all been made by a local craftsman, and the bespoke hinges and door latches by a blacksmith.

The cottage has a well equipped Shaker style galley kitchen, making clever use of the space adjacent to the bedroom and bathroom of the cottage. The bedroom has a super king sized bed formed from two three foot wide zip linked beds. The bed will be made up as a double, so if you would like it to be made up as twin beds please let us know when you book. There is also a fitted wardrobe for clothes storage with oak doors matching the other doors in the cottage. The bathroom has a modern suite of WC, basin, bath and separate shower cubicle. The entrance to the cottage is through a glazed porch which also contains the washing machine and tumble dryer.

Your comfort at Quail Cottage is assured in the winter with an underfloor central heating system, and in the summer the terrace outside the cottage provides an opportunity to enjoy drinks, or a summer barbecue in the dappled shade of the lightly wooded garden to the side of the cottage. As the owners of Quail Cottage keep a flock of sheep from a rare breed in the fields adjacent to the cottage, pets are not permitted. This cottage is not suitable for children under 10 years of age due to the close proximity of ponds. As the bed can be divided to form two single beds it would be suitable for one adult and an older child.

As Quail Cottage is on a working farm there are certain times of the year when the farming activity peaks. The busiest times are the lambing season and haymaking in mid summer.

Cuckfield and beyond

Cuckfield is one of the prettiest villages in Sussex. Being so central in the county it is an ideal location to start from when exploring the surroundings after having enjoyed the variety of local attractions. From the cottage there are many immediate walks, the most notable of which is the Sussex Ouse Valley Way, a 42 mile long distance footpath launched in 2005, which follows the valley of the river Ouse. The path passes close to Quail Cottage just a few miles from its start at Lower Beeding. Within three miles you will find Borde Hill Gardens, which have been described by Country Life magazine as one of the country’s truly great gardens. The gardens offer outstanding views across 200 acres of Grade II listed parkland and woodland.

Head north into the rolling Sussex Weald and you soon reach Ardingly Reservoir. It is a large expanse of natural water and an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are plentiful walks around the reservoir and for those who enjoy watersports it is a haven of activity for sailors, windsurfers and canoeists.

Access to and from this part of mid Sussex is excellent with other gardens such as Nymans and High Beeches just a few miles to the north and Wakehurst Place with its close association with Kew is within a fifteen minute drive to the east. With good communication links to Brighton, both the south coast and the South Downs are a short distance away, while a day trip to London by rail is easy from nearby Haywards Heath.

For steam enthusiasts The Bluebell Railway is a few miles beyond Haywards Heath, with trains running at weekends throughout the year, and daily services in the spring, summer and autumn months. If golf is your chosen form of relaxation the Cuckfield Golf Centre is close by, and offers visitors the opportunity to play nine or eighteen holes in the beautiful Wealden countryside.

Great place to stay

"Quail Cottage is the perfect place to stay and in idyllic surroundings. The cottage is very spacious and comfortable and situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Sussex as well as being in easy reach to explore many locations of interest. It was great a place to return to and relax at the end of the day and enjoy the countryside views. The hosts Margaret and Dick were most welcoming and always available for help or information. We would have no hesitation to returning in the future. Top marks are thoroughly deserved."

An idyllic country cottage

"An idyllic cottage at the bottom of a country lane with views of fields and woods, close to several National Trust properties and convenient for trains to London and the M23. It is equipped with everything that one could possibly need. One can relax in the garden and listen to the birds or walk one of the footpaths beyond the back gate. The hosts, who live in a beautiful period house on the property, are the best and provide homemade jam, ground coffee, rolls and flowers to welcome one. If one is looking for peace and quiet far from the madding crowd one will find it here."

A perfect stay in lovely location

"A most thoughtfully equipped, spacious cottage, perfect for two to stay in comfort. The location is a delight; it is that rare property - quiet but accessible for some lovely National Trust and other houses/gardens. Local wild and farmlife provide a gentle soundscape; Barley is the most polite of little dogs but owners will make sure he does not bother you if you would prefer not. The owners themselves are charming and offered a warm, generous and very genuine welcome."

Lovely place to stay

"Quail Cottage is light and airy, well furnished and equipped. Everything you might need on the domestic front is provided so you really don't need to bring anything but some food with you. The bed and the big sofas are really comfortable. The situation is lovely and the hosts (Margaret and Dick) are most welcoming. It is an ideal base for exploring the coast, beautiful houses and gardens and for walking. Highly recommended."

Excellent accommodation

"This cottage was perfect. Very very comfortable and warm and very well equipped. Much more spacious than the photos suggest. The setting is beautiful and we were blessed with lovely autumnal weather, so could enjoy the surroundings to the full. We would come back over and over, just wish it were a little less expensive. Thats the SE for you."

Quiet cottage in the Sussex countryside

"We had a lovely break staying with Margaret and Dick. The cottage is well designed and appointed, and it really shows through that the owners have lived in the place too. There is everything that you need, from an enormous bed through to a large TV, and the arrival basket sets you up well so that you don't need to bring basics for the first night - tasty homemade jam too. Wifi and phone reception is not great, but if you know about this beforehand, you can plan your days around it, if you really need to be connected - we managed to continue to run the business by checking in once a day! Local shops are a 5 minute drive away, and the best Waitrose we have come across is only a few miles further at Haywards Heath, with free wifi there. Loads of gardens locally to visit - we particularly recommend the Sussex Prairie Garden, not only for its unusual planting ideas, but for a fab cafe too. We will definitely be returning soon"

Cosy cottage in the heart of West Sussex

"My husband and I stayed in Quail cottage for two weeks during the Christmas holidays. We were able to entertain friends and family during our stay and Margaret was very accommodating when extra plates/cutlery where required. Constant hot water and ample under floor heating made it very cosy, along with the fully-fitted kitchen and super king size bed. The cottage is perfectly located to explore Sussex by car or if you like a little exercise there are public footpaths that take you into the countryside adjacent to the cottage."

I love Quail cottage, it is in a secluded location and a peaceful place to relax

"Dick and Margaret are gracious and friendly hosts, helpful but unobtrusive. The cottage is perfect for 2 people and is comfortable with good cooking facilities.
