Holiday cottage, Henfield, West Sussex
Perfect Country Holiday
"Excellent hosts and beautiful grounds, just perfect for peaceful weekend get away. Location is ideal to visit some of the attractive villages around and specifically recommend a visit to the Ginger Fox pub/restaurant. "
A quiet, comfortable and spacious cottage for a couple or small family.
"We stayed as a couple for a week in June. We particularly liked the layout of the cottage, with the bedrooms separate from the living area and plenty of utility space plus a second WC//shower room. It stayed surprisingly cool during the unexpected heatwave! The location is very quiet and private. The owners were friendly and helpful but unobtrusive. Our only disappointment is that we did not have the expected access to a pub or restaurant which we could reach without driving - the bridge across the river was closed indefinitely (this needs to be updated in the cottage folder) and the nearest pub on the way into town turned out to be unfriendly (and we couldn't get served). Apart from that we would certainly recommend the cottage as a comfortable and convenient base for exploring Sussex."
Easy to find
"The cottage had everything we needed. It was in a lovely position. Plenty of nice walks for the dog. The owners were very pleasant."
Needs some freshening up
"Needs freshening up - such as upholstery and windows - also lids on saucepans would be good and basic drinking glasses needed, enough for 4 people. Internet signal very poor could not use. Surrounding area excellent, great for walking and gardens beautiful."
Thank you for your feedback. Saucepans with lids have been added and glasses topped up. We are sorry that you struggled with the Wi-Fi, we gather you spoke with the owners most days, so please do use such opportunities to raise any issues with them as any owner would want to help sort a problem for you while you are there. The outlook and area around the cottage is picturesque, so we are glad you were able to make the most of it.
Peaceful, comfortable home from home
"The property is set in a lovely spot away from roads. The only noise is of birds and the occasional horse passing by. The owners were great hosts- welcoming us with a lovely cake, then leaving us in privacy making it clear that we could call on them at anytime should we need anything. The bungalow is very well appointed with comfortable beds and furniture, great showers with plenty of hot water, efficient heating , and a well appointed kitchen with a big fridge freezer. We had some issues with mobile phone signal and intermittent internet despite connecting with the wi-fi booster in the property but this did not cause us a major problem so we did not contact the owners about it- if we had done so they may well have been able to do something about it. But if this is something that is important to you I suggest that you check with them before you book."
Fantastic place to stay.
"We stayed here for a mid week break and what a lovely place it is. The cottage has everything you need and is very cosy. There are some lovely walks along the river. You are not far form Brighton, Devils Dyke and some pretty villages that have tea rooms with amazing scones and cakes. The owners are very friendly and their hospitality is fantastic. I would recommend River Cottage to anyone who is looking for a nice peaceful break."
"We loved every minute of our stay and the extra touches of flowers, cake, milk, and doggy treats were really appreciated. The cottage was really welcoming and had extremely comfortable beds! We had lovely weather and it was really nice to sit in the beautiful garden. Vanessa and Steve were charming and it was a pleasure to meet them. Must return for another visit soon."
Beautiful cottage lovely location
"We had a lovely stay here. The cottage was very warm and cozy, also very well equipped. Perfect for dogs and included a dog bed, bowls and treats. A hose with warm water meant we could relax about Bentley getting mucky whilst out and about exploring east Sussex. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend the cottage whole heartedly."
A peaceful and quiet hideaway
"Lovely comfortable cottage with walks along the river. Owners very helpful. Lovely cake on arrival. A few extra tumblers/long glasses and a few extra mugs would be beneficial. We found the woodburner easy to light and it brought a warm glow to the room. (Philippa from Southampton) (Nicky from Winchester)"
A Wonderful Secluded Retreat!
"We booked the River Cottage for a short break and it was everything that we hoped for. Located at the end of a quiet, secluded lane, it was exactly what we needed. We enjoyed a weekend of long walks along the Downs Link (which has a lovely cyclists cafe that serves the best hot chocolates and brownies) Devils Dyke (which is absolutely breathtaking), and the river at the end of the lane. The cottage was so well equipped and the owners had thought of everything. It was clean and fresh inside, and the beds were the comfiest we had ever slept in. We visited in the autumn time but the cottage was always so lovely and warm, with the bonus of your own log burner if it got to cold. The owners were very welcoming and advised us of some great walks and places to visit during our stay and our dog enjoyed some play time with the resident dog, Coco. Overall if you are looking for a relaxing retreat, away from the hustle and bustle of city life then this is the perfect place for you. We will definitely be booking again. "
A very pleasant experience in every respect
"Very welcoming to find cake tea and milk awaiting our arrival and note all the various necessities were available to ensure complete comfort. The owners Venessa and Steve made us feel most welcome, as well as did Coco their spaniel who visited us on numerous occasions. Would we stay again? Most certainly, the cottage was well equipped and ship shape in every respect."
"Great property to stay at set in the grounds of a beautifully kept property/gardens. The property is south facing so you have the advantage of the sun all day. The property has been renovated very well with key features still in place, it was very clean throughout except the shower in the main bathroom requires the mould cleaning from around the base. Highly recommend this property."
"We spent a week at this lovely cottage and enjoyed it greatly. Holidays with teenage kids aren?t easy, but in the mornings I went with my son to the nearby river Arun, my wife enjoyed her cup of tea on the terrace taking in the beautiful garden and the silence and my daughter slept in. The kids were happy to go shopping in Brighton, my wife and I enjoyed the hiking possibilities of the South Downs, so there was something for everybody. The only thing the kids complained about was the poor WIFI, which was very slow. But I didn?t mind. On our arrival we found a cake in the kitchen and milk in the fridge so we could enjoy our first tea right away, which made us feel very welcome. I might have to add that we were really lucky concerning the weather - sun every day!"
How often do you hear directions like 'right to the end of the lane until you can go no further?' Well that is how we will be directing you to River Cottage! This wonderful converted stable is very rural and just a short stroll to the River Adur which winds its way south to the English Channel at Shoreham by Sea.
For those wanting a complete getaway this is a perfect location. With footpaths from the door and a great rural walk over the river to the nearest pub this is the ideal setting for a very restful break.
Set in the grounds of the owners' farmhouse, River Cottage is peaceful and private. The accommodation is on one level and is superbly presented throughout for up to four guests. Taking the shape of the letter 'L' there are two wings where the living space is separated from the bedroom area. The two bedrooms are a good size with built in wardrobes so plenty of storage space. The main bedroom has a king sized double bed and a dual aspect looking onto the flower gardens. There are two shower rooms, one between both bedrooms, the second next to the living room. The twin bedroom has a small window that overlooks the very end of the lane or maybe more appropriately the bridleway that continues on towards the river. All told it is a great setting.
Henfield is an attractive small market town, with a choice of independent and individual shops. It's an interesting little town to explore and to enjoy a coffee perusing the morning papers!
Walk or cycle on The Downs Link along the old railway line from Henfield and head north towards the old station at West Grinstead station or south towards the Downs and Steyning and enjoy some beautiful scenery as it follows the line of the Adur.
Barely five miles to the south is the popular vantage point of Devil’s Dyke and the picturesque Sussex villages of Poynings and Fulking nestle beneath it at the foot of the Downs. These villages give wonderful views of the Fulking Escarpment so head west towards Bramber and Upper Beeding as the South Downs are certainly worth enjoying from here.
From the top of the South Downs the chalk hills slope away towards Brighton. It is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. The Palace Pier and Sea Life centre is an enjoyable day for young families while for adults the decadence of the Royal Pavillion, once the summer home to the Prince Regent, is worth seeing along with the nearby and very famous Brighton Lanes. Brighton is a hub for entertainment with a wide range of restaurants, bars and eateries., it’s a great family city, yet returning to the seclusion of River Cottage is never more than a twenty minute drive away.
