Arundel and beyond

Arundel is a historic market town dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tearooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy its hospitality.

Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep which dates from the 11th century to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs is definitely worth the effort.

The River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife. With more than 60 acres of ponds, lakes and reed beds, Arundel Wetland Trust attracts some of the worlds' most spectacular ducks, geese and swans. The best way to enjoy the river is on a river cruise stopping off at the Black Rabbit pub or proceeding further north where the river hugs the scarp wooded slope at the foot of the Downs before reaching Amberley.

Further afield Arundel is well placed for the coast. Climping Beach and Littlehampton’s West Beach are only a short drive away. This is a beautiful unspoilt length of beach of Special Scientific Interest and at the eastern end beside the mouth of the River Arun is the West Beach Café built by local craftsmen using materials sourced locally. It is well worth a visit, the fish and chips come highly recommended!

Goodwood and Fontwell racecourses are nearby providing a host of events throughout the year and, for theatre goers, there is the option of travelling a short distance to Chichester to see the excellent productions at the Festival Theatre.

Generous living area

"Swan Cottage is a comfortable, well-furnished holiday base. Handy for shops, buses and not too far from the train - a couple of parking bays was also helpful in our case. The downside is that it is very close to the by-pass, which means noisy if the windows are open on the river side of the cottage, even at night. Overall, though, the comfort inside, the helpfulness of the owner and the close proximity of the middle of Arundel far outweighed that negative aspect."

Swan for four

"Excellent property and extras from owner, lovely town and area - rotten location, way too close to A27 and therefore very noisy at all times of the day/night but ok if you can sleep through traffic noise."

Dear Mr Gibney Were pleased that you liked Swan Cottage and the area but am sorry to hear that the road noise troubled you. It has not been a problem for any of our previous guests. Swan Cottage is a town centre property, as advised in our contact details, so any prospective guests should be aware that if they are after a tranquil location this may not best suit them. Ellen

Wonderful cottage with added bonus of parking!

"We arrived at Swan Cottage to be greeted by the owner who was very friendly and helpful. He showed us around and told us of local places to eat/drink, etc. There was a welcome pack of milk, butter, bread and biscuits along with an assortment of sachets of coffee and coffee pods, and tea bags - all much appreciated. The cottage was immaculate on arrival and everything in excellent condition. A really comfortable home-from-home! The location proved to be very good and with the added bonus of two parking spaces (off road). We were able to walk into the town which was only a matter of minutes. The view from the 1st floor balcony was beautiful but unfortunately, apart from the first evening, we were not able to make use of it due to the weather being cold, wet and windy. We all enjoyed our stay in Swan Cottage and would certainly recommend this property. We hope to return. "

Lovely property, excellent location

"Swan Cottage was the best self-catering property I have experienced. It was beautifully furnished and decorated and ideally situated overlooking the River Arun, just a short walk from the centre of Arundel. Two car spaces meant we didn't have to try to park in the narrow streets of the town. The owner welcomed us warmly and explained everything we needed to know. She had also provided basic essentials eg bread, milk, butter, etc (much appreciated after our long journey). "

"We stayed in swan cottage for a week in July. From the moment we walked in we felt at home. The quality and cleanliness of the property is outstanding. very high spec kitchen appliances, good quality bed linen and towels and very importantly comfortable beds!. The cottage also boasts two parking spaces which are like hens teeth in Arundel.. You are also in walking distance of all places of interest in the town, including many excellent restaurants. "

Lovely property

"This beautiful new cottage is lovely decorated with lots of finishing touches. It provides everything you wish for. The bedlinnen and towels are top of the range. The centre of Arundel is just around the corner and we made nice walks along the river. Lots of opportunities for sightseeing nearby. We went to Brighton, Winchester, Chichester and visited Highdown Gardens. The owners were so friendly and helpful. We felt very welcome and had a great week. This is without a doubt one of the best cottages we ever stayed in. We would love to came back someday."
