The perfect family holiday cottage set in woodland at the foot of the glorious Hampshire Hangers

Found in the quiet hamlet of Steep Marsh, Taylors Copse Cottage enjoys its own private setting in the heart of beautiful bluebell woodland, at the foot of the renowned Hampshire Hangers. In the spring it is understandably a wonderful carpet of colour, and guests can enjoy the many walks that lead through these private woods.

This is a perfect place to stay for anyone with a young family, since it is also a small holding with new born lambs each spring plus also, horses are kept in the adjacent stables and are exercised each day.

The cottage is perfectly in keeping with its surroundings, and offers very comfortable accommodation for five in two bedrooms. The second bedroom with three single beds is exceptionally spacious and the cottage can if need be accommodate six through use of a futon that is provided in that room. The main double bedroom is on the ground floor, but is on a slightly lower level and since it is accessed via a few stairs from the hallway, it makes a nice feature and gives this cottage a feeling of being that little bit individual.

The central living room has comfortable leather sofas and a feature wood burning stove. Doors open out onto the terrace and the garden beyond. The kitchen is spacious with good dining space and is fully equipped.

Steep Marsh and beyond

Steep Marsh is on the edge of the Hampshire Hangers, one of Hampshire’s most beautiful woodland areas. Consisting of 323 acres of woodland, with many magnificent beech trees, there is a rise and fall in the landscape here made the more impressive by the fact most the area is covered in trees. The scenery is outstanding and has been given the name “Little Switzerland” to this part of Hampshire.

Being amidst such beautiful scenery, the cottage falls comfortably within the South Downs National Park. It is just two miles from the historic market town of Petersfield and its leisure facilities. As the main junction between London to Portsmouth, and Midhurst to Winchester the town enjoyed a brisk trade in coaching days and in 1696-97 had no fewer than nine coaching inns listed. There are certainly no shortage of country inns in the vicinity today!

Butser Hill at 270 metres (890 feet) is the highest point on the South Downs. It is easily accessible being just a short distance south of the town. The climb to the top is challenging, but the views are rewarding and there is a refreshment kiosk at the top! It forms part of the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Hampshire’s biggest country park offering 20 miles of trails for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It is a popular recreational area. We feature a link to the park under our section “Places to visit” for East Hampshire from our homepage.

Also listed are Hinton Ampner, and Stansted Park both within easy reach, and across the border into Sussex is the National Trust property Uppark, located high on the Downs at South Harting.

This area is very accessible, Portsmouth’s historic dockyard, the Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays are within twenty minutes by rail or car, while Winchester and the western end of the South Downs are easily accessible due west from Petersfield.

Quiet

"Great location to get away from the rat race but at the same time have easy access to amenities if needed. Close to London, Winchester, Chichester. Lovely traditional pubs and good walks. Best of all was relaxing with a book and watching the deer."

We couldn't fault it

"We thoroughly enjoyed our short break at Taylors Copse Cottage. The owners were very welcoming and helpful, without being intrusive. The cottage was lovely and absolutely everything we needed was provided. The surroundings were beautiful. We went for a lovely walk up onto the Ashford Hangars and had day trips to Chichester, Arundel Cottage and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. We couldn't fault it. Thank you."

A stunning location

"We recently stayed at Taylors Copse Cottage for 5 nights, and we will definitely return. The cottage is in a stunning location with lots of walks on the doorstep, it is very private and very very quiet. Our grand daughter Alison loved the horse, chickens and Penny and Phillips adorable dogs, who were very friendly, and we even had a couple of visits from the local deer! The cottage itself contains everything you could ever need - and more - and is very comfortable. Every thing has been thought of, the little touches were especially nice, the fridge welcome pack, the fresh flowers, tea, coffee etc., we could not fault it at all. The owners, Penny and Phillip are very friendly and welcoming, lovely people. All in all we had a fantastic stay, we would thoroughly recommend the cottage to anyone and everyone. We would give it an A plus :) Many thanks to Penny and Phillip for making us so welcome but for giving us privacy and space, hope to see you again soon."

Absolutely brilliant ! When can I book for next year ?

"A family get-together to celebrate my 70th. Young to old loved it. 2 yr old grand-daughter loved running through the blue-bell woods with my beagle. Cottage extremely well equipped and owner obligingly squeezed in an extra bed for my son for a couple of nights. Will be back!"

Just the accommodation we were looking for; and friendly and helpful hosts

"We (two adults and one toddler) were all delighted with this accommodation. Inside, the cottage was clean, quiet, and comfortable, with all the amenities that we needed. Outside: a lovely garden space, direct and easy access to countryside walks and pubs, and a farmyard setting which particularly fascinated our little boy. The hosts were welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. We have no hesitation in recommending this property to others, and very much hope that we will have the chance to return."

Absolut empfehlenswert!"
