Midhurst and beyond

With numerous restaurants and bars on the doorstep of The Loft, you can have a leisurely morning enjoying a freshly brewed coffee whilst planning out your day exploring this lovely town and the surrounding South Downs.

Midhurst is a thriving country market town and is a delightful mix of medieval, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture as well as a town of historical social and political significance. In Midhurst the grand Tudor ruins of Cowdray House form an imposing backdrop to Midhurst, a market town full of character and old world charm. The town is home to many fine 17th and 18th century buildings and provided the setting for many stories by past resident HG Wells. Today Midhurst is closely associated with Cowdray Park well known for the Polo held from spring onwards and, in particular, the Gold Cup events which are hosted each summer.

The historic market town of Petworth lies six miles east of Midhurst and is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House completed in 1696 and the deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The House and its grounds are now owned and maintained by the National Trust and feature the Summer Festival of musical concerts held within the park which make a perfect setting to enjoy a picnic and open air concert. Petworth town is full of quaint houses and cottages many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to the house.

Drive twenty minutes and you can be at the Goodwood Estate where you can enjoy the premier motorsport events as well as the Glorious Goodwood racing festival. Or, of course, you can explore the wonders Goodwood House which combines the glamour of a great English country house with the warmth of a family home. Home to the Earl and Countess of March this elegant Sussex house provides a dramatic setting for one of the most significant private art collections in the country.

Further afield, and you can visit the vibrant city of Chichester which is twelve miles from The Loft and is one of the great well-preserved Georgian cities in the UK. The streets are packed with listed buildings including the imposing cathedral which has been a part of Chichester history for almost 1000 years. The city centre is enclosed within the ancient city walls which is ideal for exploring by foot. With its plethora of attractions, shops and restaurants, Chichester is a cosmopolitan city with a vibrant and friendly vibe and is, of course, home to a dynamic arts scene offering many galleries and museums to peruse.
