Fairlight is a small village on the coast amidst breathtaking rolling hills, five miles east of Hastings with its nearby villages of Pett and Pett Level that are equally picturesque. The area forms part of the Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve that stretches from Hastings to Cliff End where there is access to the beach at Pett Level. Further east there are long stretches of beach towards Winchelsea making it very popular with walkers and those interested in wildlife.

The Country Park has over 267 hectares of ancient woodland, heathland and grassland together with three miles (5km) of dramatic cliffs and coastline. Lying within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, most of the park has been designated a Special Area of Conservation, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and is a designated Local Nature Reserve. Hastings Old Town is nearby and sits at the foot of the Hastings Cliff Railways, the East Lift in fact links the old town with the Country Park and the railway is currently Britain’s steepest.

Hastings Old Town is full of historic buildings and quaint streets and is particularly famous for its beach fishing fleet, the largest in Europe. Much of the tradition has been kept and the net drying huts are today preserved at the top of the beach and sit amongst the many fresh fish stores at the foot of the cliffs. The Shipwreck and Coastal Heritage Museum is also found here, along with the Jerwood Gallery and all worth visiting.

The medieval town of Rye is 8 miles away. A visit to the Heritage Centre is a must, where you can watch the town model's 'Sound & Light' show, which goes into detail about the history & the colourful past of Rye and its inhabitants and visit the 'Old Penny Pier Machines' upstairs. Or amble around the many antique shops in the Strand Quay and hunt out a bargain!

This whole area is of course 1066 Country and we could comment forever about what there is to see and do. Suffice to say, no visit would be complete without a trip to Battle and Battle Abbey.

The Nest near Hastings

"The location of The Nest is excellent giving very easy access to Hastings Country Park with its wonderful views over the sea. The accommodation was comfortable apart from pillows that were rather lumpy. The details of the place included reference to Sky but actually gave no access to any Sky channels. This was disappointing. The owners' accommodation over The Nest resulted in some floor noise at night. The owners control the heating which seemed not to come on during the day, up to about 4pm. Despite these points, we enjoyed our stay in this spacious and modern accommodation. "

Thank you so much for leaving a comprehensive review of your recent stay at 'The Nest'. The owners do not control the heating for the apartment, there are clear instructions on changing the settings in the folder in the apartment and a wall thermostat to adjust heat. Its such a shame you didn't contact us or the owner during your stay for assistance. We apologise about the inconvenience of the lack of a Sky package, although there is a Sky box in the apartment the owner is now only offering Free-view. Despite the minor niggles, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay and loved the location. We hope you will stay with us again some time in the future.
