Review - The Potting Shed

"Lovely cottage, very comfortable and very well equipped, arrived to fresh bread, eggs, milk, home made jam and even some tasty homemade cakes. We arrived early just to get our barings but we're allowed in. Dianne and Nigel were very hospitable, friendly and welcoming, gave us lots of information on things to do in the local area, local walks, pubs and reatuarants. My 2 children of 14 and 11 loved it too, a real back to basics family week end, we had a great time and will definitely return."

The Potting Shed was a great place for a holiday. The cottage is very complete! The beds were ready. There was even bread, milk, butter and jam (big refridgerator and freezer). And the household items are mostly Marks &Spencer quality. It's quiet, near the woods for walking and near nice places as The Petworth House (and Park) and to the beach and sea (West Wittering) is a 45 minute drive. The cottage has three floors and on the terrace there is privacy and it's great to see a lot of birds eating of the bird feed in the garden of the owners, Nigel and Diana. They are lovely people and do everything to make your stay good and pleasant. Our boys, 12 and 17 also enjoyed it here very much. We visited friends, some musea, the beach, walked in the woods, had a tour in Petworth House and did a picknick in the Park on another sunny day and relaxed in the cottage. We had WIFI, a television and played family games and watched dvd's. Thanks to Nigel and Diana, for this wonderfull cottage that brought us a wonderfull relaxing holiday!! We would love to come back!!

“Love "the potting shed" Nigel and Diana are just amazing hosts. It was a home away from home and had all the extra touches to make us feel so welcome.”

“The Potting Shed was a perfectly wonderful, peaceful retreat from our very busy and rather stressful lives. Light, airy, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The birdsong was magnificent!!!!! and so were the walks. WE LOVED IT ALL.”

We could not fault the property or the owners, the whole experience was first class.
We highly recommend The Potting Shed!

"Diane and Nigel couldn't have been more welcoming and made us feel very at home in Little Bognor. The Potting Shed itself was incredibly warm and comfortable, providing a cosy retreat from the wet, windy February weather. The standard of the furnishings and equipment provided was extremely high - from the Emma Bridgewater crockery and appropriately themed china 'Potting Shed' mugs to the comfortable bed with unusual carved headboard. We enjoyed several long countryside walks with the children and dog, including in particular a walk across fields to a pub for Sunday lunch – a route provided by Diane and Nigel. The cottage was well equipped for walkers with plenty of maps and walks books. Little Bognor is a peaceful spot in a beautiful part of Sussex and we hope to return again another year."

"The Potting Shed is a fantastic holiday destination set in beautiful surroundings. The owners could not have been more helpful or friendly. The cottage was very clean and tidy and all necessary equipment was provided. We loved the 'upside-down' layout with bedrooms on the ground floor and living/dining rooms above due to the slope of the garden. The house is very well situated in the South Downs so it is not far to travel to the numerous tourist attractions. All in all a fantastic holiday with great accommodation and helpful owners. Our first visit to the area but not our last. Would recommend Amberley House Cottage Holiday to anyone. Thank you :-)"

"The property was very comfortable and cosy with everything there. It was in a brilliant location for plenty of cross country walks. The owners were very accommodating and pleasant people. Would seriously think of staying again and would definitely recommend to friends and family. Truly lovely."

A perfect holiday retreat in deepest Sussex yet ideally placed for touring this beautiful county

Over 150 years ago The Potting Shed was central to a 27 acre orchard located on the south facing slopes in the tiny hamlet of Little Bognor next to Fittleworth that look straight to the South Downs. For it was here that workers gathered to collect their wages from a downstairs office that is now the main bedroom in this beautiful cottage.

Today it is a most charming oak clad and stone two bedroom detached holiday cottage within the South Downs National Park. The cottage shares the grounds of the owners’ home and is laid out with the living room and kitchen area on the ground floor and the two bedrooms and bathroom below. Double doors from the living room open onto the outside terrace which gives the cottage much natural light. A feature woodburning stove which although gas gives a focus to the room and a cosy warm glow in winter.

The cottage is very comfortable and comprehensively equipped. The kitchen and dining area is also bright and spacious and sits at a slightly raised level to the main living room. The main bedroom below is fitted with a king sized bed while the second bedroom is fitted with three foot bunk beds. Since this room is smaller there is the option of using a sofa bed in the living room should flexibility of accommodation be needed. There is an additional charge for use of linen when the sofa bed is required. The main bathroom is fitted with a bath and shower attachment above and there is also a cloakroom on the main floor.

For the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival Meeting secure parking can be offered for anyone bringing a classic car.

Fittleworth and beyond

Little Bognor is a tiny hamlet that enjoys peace and seclusion yet is perfectly located to explore this beautiful area within the South Downs National Park. Consisting of just a few houses an old mill and a letterbox! there are outstanding views towards the South Downs and every opportunity to enjoy lovely walks from the doorstep.

Three miles away the Pulborough Brooks fall on the boundary of the Park and incorporate the River Arun flood plain. It is in fact a deliberate flood plain, so periodically it becomes a spectacular lake totally transforming the landscape. There are many excellent walks across the Brooks and along the banks of the River Arun offering uninterrupted views south towards the South Downs. Part of the Brooks contains one of the RSPB’s major reserves in the south and just five miles from the cottage. We carry a link to the RSPB reserve within ‘Places to visit’ on our website.

Also nearby is the West Sussex Golf Club which is regularly judged one of the outstanding inland courses in Britain. It is five miles from the Potting Shed so for the keen golfer is very convenient indeed.

Six miles south east in the direction of Storrington and nestling at the foot of the South Downs is Parham House, a magnificent Elizabethan home that is a real jewel. Again it is featured under ‘Places to visit’ - a half day there is time well spent.

A short distance west from Little Bognor is the historic market town of Petworth. It is best known as the location of the stately home Petworth House and deer park which was landscaped by Capability Brown. The house and its grounds are now owned by the National Trust. The magnificent country house contains an internationally renowned art collection with numerous works by Turner. Petworth itself was immortalised in his paintings. The town is full of quaint houses and cottages, many within their own courtyard settings. They are interspersed with antique shops and tearooms so it makes the ideal place for a stroll following a visit to Petworth House and Park.

This area of West Sussex has a variety of events that occur through the year from Goodwood racing and the Goodwood motorsport meetings, to the Petworth Festival, racing at Fontwell and polo at Cowdray. Details on all of these are found under our ‘What’s on’ heading.
