Holiday cottage, Flansham, West Sussex
"our stay at wellow barn was very good all round. Great location for getting around the coastal area .We found local walks for our dog in the countryside just 50 mtr from wellow barn .Would stay here again."
Surprisingly spacious barn conversion.
"Lovely from the first moment. Met at barn by the owner and shown around. Great barn conversion, either everything we needed."
Not up to expectations.
"The Amberley House Cottage Holiday Group on-line description did not indicate that the property was attached to another and we experienced a lot of noise from the next door property. We felt that the lack of WFI ,any welcome pack and the general standard of equipment was disappointing, however the location of the barn was excellent ."
"Due to the unforseen circumstances regarding the death of Virginia we felt a little saddened to have arrived at this very sad time. However, Lionel was very welcoming and helpfull with regards to me wanting to clean my car providing buckets etc. The Barn was very well equiped in regards to kitchen equipment as this was very welcome in regards to my food allergy having the facilities to cook my own food. In regards to the lay out of the Barn it was very comfortable home from home was what we felt relaxed, very open and airy so much so you could have lived there. We wish Lionel all the very best and send our deepest sympathys for his great loss. Maurice & Liz Hugo. "
A wonderful place to stay.
"We enjoyed staying at Wellow Barn for a second time and couldn't have been happier. As before, this beautiful barn conversion was immaculate and Lionel, the owner, gave us a warm welcome and then left us to enjoy our holiday knowing that we could call upon him if needed. The weather was fantastic all week and we were conveniently placed, in this beautiful village, for trips to the seaside and nearby Arundel. Would recommend to anyone. We'll be back!"
It is like entering a small oasis when you turn into Flansham, something we know guests find very restful. Wellow Barn is a beautifully converted period barn right in the heart of this small hamlet. The barn is in a great setting for walking locally while having easy access to the coast at Elmer and Middleton on Sea, as well as access inland to the South Downs.
The barn is exceptionally well presented with under floor heating throughout and much thought has been given to presentation and to guests comfort. Little period touches like the glass brick holes through the building highlight its history as a once working building.
The impressive kitchen dining hall combining with the galleried sitting room makes a great space and offers much room for four people to relax.
The two ground floor bedrooms are both double rooms, one is fitted with a king sized bed, the second with a conventional double. The bathroom is also on the ground floor and is fitted with a bath with shower attachment.
Flansham is a beautifully unspoilt hamlet found along a quiet lane and is very close to the sea.
The popular beach at Climping, which is probably the most accessible, is an area of special scientific interest and stretches for a couple of miles between Elmer and Littlehampton. On the eastern end is West Beach that meets with the estuary of the River Arun at Littlehampton. At the top of the beach is the West Beach Café constructed from locally sourced materials by local craftsmen. It comes highly recommended for its fish and chips!
To the west of nearby Bognor Regis you come to Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve. It is another area of outstanding natural beauty and special scientific interest. The harbour is tidal so is full of wildlife.
Chichester the cathedral city of Sussex is no more than five miles from the barn. It has played a key role in the affairs of Sussex since at least Roman times. The city has broad streets that are packed with listed buildings headed by the towering presence of the cathedral.
The city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls, which helps to make Chichester compact and pleasant to explore on foot. It is a cosmopolitan, vibrant and friendly city proudly combining two thousand years of heritage with a lively lifestyle. A trip to the Chichester Festival Theatre close by to the centre is worth considering since it is famous for the quality of theatre productions, many of which premiere here before moving on to the London theatre scene. For the film buff the cinema complex and nearby restaurants to the south of the city also make for an enjoyable evening out.
Five miles northeast of Flansham on the River Arun is the historic market town of Arundel dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. The town makes an imposing site when approached from the south. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tearooms. It’s a great place to wander and just enjoy its hospitality.
There is always much to see and do in Sussex and staying so near the coast gives the best of both; beaches very close by and an easy springboard back inland to explore the South Downs, a great area to walk.
