One of the more unusual holiday cottages in Sussex! Superbly done and exceptionally well presented

This old Victorian pumping station fell redundant following the opening of the nearby Ardingly Resevoir in 1975. Prior to then it pumped drinking water to the properties at the very top of the village when water was piped to Turners Hill from Caterham to the north of the North Downs.

Converted by the current owners over the last ten years it has been very cleverly presented to provide rather different and exceptional accommodation that will sleep five guests. Pump House Lodge sits adjacent to the owners’ home yet offers complete privacy and wonderful views from the terrace over the rolling hills of the Sussex High Weald.

The living room and conservatory dining room provide a great space and the large comfortable sofas and armchairs enhance the feeling of real spaciousness on offer here. One of the three bedrooms is located on the ground floor and has a shower room right beside it. This double bedroom looks out onto the terrace and is a lovely private room. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms. The principal double bedroom is beautifully bright and from the roof windows has great views east over the hills. The single bedroom also shares those same views as does the upstairs family bathroom, a bathroom with a difference you might say! It is fitted with a bath and a separate power shower above.

Turners Hill and beyond

Pump House Lodge sits on the edge of the village of Turners Hill. From the front door there are public bridleways heading east that open up to offer views towards East Grinstead and beyond to the Ashdown Forest in the far distance.

Turners Hill and beyond

Pump House Lodge sits on the edge of the village of Turners Hill. From the front door there are public bridleways heading east that open up to offer views towards East Grinstead and beyond to the Ashdown Forest in the far distance.

Turners Hill has a wonderful mix of period properties and cottages. The village is set at one of the higher parts on the Sussex Weald and retains its local village store, a choice of village pubs and a village restaurant. It is a perfect location to sample what this part of Sussex has to offer.

The National Trust property at Standen is just five miles from Pump House Lodge. The Victorian house inspired by the architect Philip Webb and his friend William Morris is tucked away at the end of a quiet Sussex lane and offers stunning views over the High Weald towards the Weir Wood Resevoir. A visit here can easily keep you occupied for a day.

Now open through to East Grinstead, four miles to the east of Turners Hill, the Bluebell Railway has finally connected with the mainline rail service. It offers a restful trip through the heart of mid Sussex heading south through Horsted Keynes to Sheffield Park. Sheffield Park Gardens is an internationally renowned garden and parkland also owned by the National Trust. Other nearby attractions are Wakehurst Place, home to the Millennium Seed Bank, Nymans House and Gardens and High Beeches Garden. All are within a fifteen minute drive of Pump House Lodge.

November 2018

A short autumn family break

"We stayed at the Pump House Lodge for three nights in November as part of my 60th birthday celebration there were four adult family members in our party which covered three generations including my 84 year old mother, we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the property which was spotlessly clean and well equipped to ensure that our break went according to plan, the lodge was ideally located for many surrounding attractions which were all easily accessible, Karen the owner met us on arrival and was very informative and helpful we were then left to enjoy our stay in privacy. Thank you Karen and Cliff we thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing break and will consider returning at some point in the future. "

Excellent comfortable cottage

"A fantastic place to stay, we would definitely stay again. Accommodation was 5 star + with attention given to every detail. Everything you would ever need in the bathrooms was provided. Kitchen was very well stocked with crockery, cutlery and pans etc. Welcoming cakes were delicious. Easy walk to two good pubs."

This property exceeded my expectations

"This property exceeded my expectations, so much was provided, even fresh flowers. The only item I took which I used was my vegetable knife and peeler. The accommodation is so good for couples who wish to enjoy each others company without being on top of one another. One bedroom and bathroom is off the kitchen while the other two are upstairs enabling use of the bathroom or kitchen during the night without disturbing the other couple . There is also a conservatory so if you wish to have a quiet read whilst the tv is on in the main room you can. Chairs, sofa's and beds are very comfortable and the the whole place was lovely and warm. Highly recommended. "

Delightful stay

"The Old Pump House was perhaps the best self-catering cottage at which we have stayed so far. It is very well equipped and very well situated for seeing some outstanding places of historical interest and very well placed for excellent walking. Some good local pubs (we were especially taken by the Cat in West Hoathly and the Gardeners' Arms near Wakehurst Place - but also two pretty good establishments in Turner's Hill itself). Karen and Cliff were excellent hosts and always ready to help. Good shopping facilities in nearby East Grinstead. Lovely place - do go there, if you can.. "

Perfect weeks holiday .

"Lovely property in an ideal and peaceful location which is exceptionally comfortable and very well furnished /equipped. Owner, who greeted us on arrival with tea and delicious homemade cakes was very friendly and welcoming. In the village two lovely pubs within walking distance and an excellent award winning Indian restaurant on the edge of the village. Property is ideally located for exploring Sussex (i.e. Bluebell railway, Sheffield Park, Brighton + i360 tower on a clear day, Wakehurst). We never visited everything we planned and would certainly consider renting this property again."

Excellent Rental Property

"We loved everything about this cottage. Very well equipped and owner's Karen & Cliff were delightful. Karen had left us some nice cakes and milk in the fridge. The location was a typical small English village with a few good pubs, small grocery store etc. The only downside for us, we found the beds quite hard, but we are old folks, we like our beds soft. For younger folks, don't think they would be complaining. Would highly recommend this property, Karen has done a wonderful job making this cottage feel like home."

Lovely cottage and a warm welcome

"We very much enjoyed our stay. Right from the warm welcome and the home made cake to our final day. Karen made us feel at home and there were all sorts of nice touches such as tea and coffee available and toiletries in the bathrooms. The use of space at the Lodge has been well thought out with clever ideas such as a large mirror on a hinge so you can see in it while using electric sockets. The Lodge was very clean and tidy throughout and was well equipped - there was nothing that we needed that we didn't have access to. We'd definitely recommend the Pump House Lodge to others."
